At Least Six Dead In Indonesia From A 5.9 Magnitude Earthquake

At least six dead in Indonesia from a 5.9 magnitude earthquake. The deceased died from a rock falling as a result of the earthquake, which has also caused material damage in several regions.

At least six people have died and another has been injured as a result of an earthquake of preliminary magnitude 5.9 registered this morning in the east of the Indonesian island of Java , as reported by the spokesman of the Government agency for Disaster Management , Raditya Jati.

The earthquake occurred in the Indian Ocean 91 kilometers off the southern coast of East Java. Its hypocenter has been located at a depth of 96 kilometers, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center.

All the deceased , including a woman, died from a rock falling as a result of the earthquake, which has particularly affected the population of Lumajang and Malang, as reported by the country’s Civil Protection agency.

Material damage
The earthquake has also caused material damage to houses in the region, according to authorities, including parliamentary buildings, a school and a hospital.

At the moment there is no evidence of aftershocks while the damage assessment continues, reports the ‘Jakarta Post’.
